There is a new afro house genre, that is beginning to make waves all over the world: 3-step! Coming from South Africa, 3-step is pioneered by producers like Thakzin, MÖRDA, Atmos Blaq, and Heavy-K. 3-step is influenced by amapiano, afro tech, highlife, and probably even gqom. It commonly features a 3-step kick drum, stripped-down soundscapes and a faster tempo than amapiano – 118 bpm, compared to amapiano's 112-114 bpm.
Thakzin describes the genre
"In 3-step, each and every sound matters. It's mostly driven by the rhythm and the communication of drums. However, musicality plays a huge role because it balances the mood of the song. With tracks like 'Magnificent Dance' or 'Possessed,' my intention was to create bridges between different sounds and scenes, to create something new and more open. Coming from a country that prides itself on being creative, some of us are endlessly looking for ways to be different. Globally, what Afro house became, has been losing its authenticity and fading away from its roots. We're just trying another way to approach house music. Another seed has been planted."
